A taxi from Bristol to Heathrow with Esskay Cars costs from £179 in a saloon. That is a fixed fare for the whole car, with the airport charges included. It is a long journey, about 115 miles along the M4, but it takes you from your front door to the departures kerb with no changes and no luggage on trains. The fare from Heathrow back to Bristol is £179.

Bristol has its own airport, but Heathrow is still the gateway for most long-haul flights, and for many airlines and destinations that Bristol does not serve. Families heading on long-haul holidays, business travellers, students and anyone with an awkward departure time often find a direct car the least stressful option. For a group, a people carrier fare split between six people is often comparable to train tickets.

Journey time

The route is almost entirely motorway. From central Bristol, the driver joins the M32 to the M4 at Junction 19, or uses Junction 20 from the north of the city. The M4 then runs east past Swindon and Reading all the way to Junction 4b, where it meets the M25 for Heathrow.

When you travel Typical journey time
Overnight or very early morning 1 hour 45 minutes to 2 hours
Weekday off-peak 2 hours to 2 hours 15 minutes
Weekday peak 2 hours 30 minutes to 3 hours
Friday afternoon or bank holiday Up to 3 hours 30 minutes

The busiest stretch is usually the M4 between Reading and the M25, which is a smart motorway with variable speed limits. Roadworks can also slow things down around Swindon. For long-haul flights, we recommend leaving Bristol at least four and a half hours before departure. If there is a closure on the M4, the driver can come off and use the A4 or another clear route around the closure, and your fare does not change.

When to leave Bristol

Flight Leave Bristol by
Short-haul with checked bags 4 hours before departure
Long-haul 4 hours 30 minutes before departure
Early morning flight before 8am Roads are quieter; leave about 4 hours before
Peak Friday or holiday departure 5 hours before departure

Taxi, train or coach?

Option How it works Typical time door to door
Esskay Cars taxi Door to door, no changes 2 to 2.5 hours
Train Bristol to Reading, then the Elizabeth line or the RailAir coach 2.5 to 3 hours
Coach Direct coach from Bristol coach station to Heathrow About 2.5 to 3 hours

For a solo traveller with a backpack, the coach is the cheapest option. Families, groups, anyone with a lot of luggage, and people flying at awkward times usually prefer the car. For six people, a people carrier at £236 works out at under £40 each.

Coming home: Heathrow to Bristol

For the return journey, book with your flight number. The driver tracks the flight and waits in the arrivals hall with a name sign. After a long-haul flight, the last thing you want is a train connection at Reading. In the car, you can sleep most of the way home. A saloon from Heathrow to Bristol is £179.

Students and universities

The University of Bristol and UWE Bristol have many international students, and many of them fly home through Heathrow at the end of term. They often have a year’s worth of luggage with them, which is hard to manage on a train with a change at Reading. Two or three students on similar flights can share an estate or people carrier and split the fare. Give us the hall of residence or the street address when you book.

Business travellers

Bristol has a strong aerospace, engineering and financial services sector, and many local employers send staff overseas through Heathrow. A car lets you work or rest on the way, and with a fixed fare, the cost is known in advance for expense claims. The executive saloon is a Mercedes E-Class or similar. For regular trips, we can take bookings well in advance.

Late-night and early-morning arrivals

Many long-haul flights land at Heathrow between 5am and 7am. At that time, getting back to Bristol by public transport can mean a long wait for the first coach or train. A pre-booked car is waiting in arrivals whenever you land, and the roads west on the M4 are usually clear early in the morning. The fare is the same at any hour.

Family holidays

For families heading on long-haul holidays, the biggest advantage is not having to manage children and luggage through stations. Tell us the ages of your children and whether you are bringing car seats, so we send the right vehicle. If anyone needs a break on the long drive, mention it when you book so we can allow time.

Choosing a vehicle for a long journey

Two hours is a long time in a car, so comfort matters. A saloon is fine for two people. An estate gives a family of four room to stretch out and space for four large cases. A people carrier carries six passengers and five cases, and the 8-seater minivan carries eight. For business travel, the executive saloon is £244. Groups of twelve or sixteen can travel together in a minibus.

Heathrow or Bristol Airport?

Bristol Airport is much closer, but it mainly serves short-haul European and holiday routes. For long-haul flights to North America, Asia, the Middle East and Africa, most travellers from Bristol fly from Heathrow. If your airline offers a choice, compare the flight price difference with the cost of getting to Heathrow. For a family, the cheaper long-haul fares from Heathrow often more than cover the taxi.
