Which airport is closest to RAF Lakenheath and Mildenhall?

Stansted is the closest London airport, about an hour away. Luton is around an hour and a half, Heathrow about two hours, and Gatwick around two and a half hours.

From the bases to Distance Typical time
Stansted About 50 miles 1 hour to 1 hour 15 minutes
Luton About 75 miles 1 hour 30 minutes to 1 hour 45 minutes
Heathrow About 100 miles 2 hours to 2 hours 30 minutes
Gatwick About 120 miles 2 hours 15 minutes to 2 hours 45 minutes

The route to Stansted runs down the A11 and M11. For Heathrow and Gatwick, the driver continues round the M25. Allow extra time on Friday afternoons and around the Dartford Crossing for Gatwick.

Where do you pick up at the bases?

At the main gate, the visitor centre, or your on-base or off-base home where access allows.

Our drivers do not usually have base access, so for on-base housing the easiest option is to meet at the gate or visitor centre. Many service members live off base in Brandon, Mildenhall, Lakenheath village, Thetford, Bury St Edmunds, Newmarket or Ely, and we collect from any of these addresses. Give us clear directions or a what3words location for rural homes.

Can you handle PCS moves with a lot of luggage?

Yes. Book an estate, a people carrier or the 8-seater minivan, depending on how much you are taking.

A family on a permanent change of station move may travel with six to ten large cases, plus carry-on bags and car seats. The 8-seater minivan holds eight large cases. For families with even more, book two vehicles or a minibus. Tell us roughly how many bags you have, and we will recommend the right size.

Can you meet arriving service members and families?

Yes. The driver waits in the arrivals hall with a name sign and tracks your flight.

Many new arrivals land at Heathrow or Stansted after a long flight from the US, sometimes with children and pets. A pre-booked car means you do not need to work out trains to Suffolk on your first day in the UK. The fare is fixed, and the driver helps with all the luggage.

Do you take pets?

Ask when you book. Tell us about the pet, its size and whether it is in a carrier, and we will check what we can arrange.

Assistance dogs are always welcome. For pets arriving as cargo at Heathrow, the collection point is separate from the passenger terminal, so tell us in advance if you need to collect a pet.

What is included in the fixed fare?

The fare covers the whole vehicle, the driver, fuel, tolls on the usual route and the airport drop-off or pick-up charge.

You pay the price quoted, not a price per person, so a family of four in a saloon or estate pays the same as a single passenger. Waiting time and parking at arrivals are allowed for in the quote when you book a pick-up. If you add an extra stop on the way, for example to collect a colleague in Brandon or Thetford, add it in the booking form and the price updates before you confirm.

Which vehicle should I book from the bases?

A saloon suits up to three passengers with three medium cases. An estate takes four people and four large cases. A people carrier or 8-seater suits families on a PCS move.

Vehicle Passengers Large cases Good for
Saloon 3 3 Single travellers, couples, short leave trips
Estate 4 4 Small families, extra luggage
People carrier 6 5 Families with children and car seats
8-seater minivan 8 8 PCS moves and larger groups
16-seater minibus 16 14 Unit travel and group deployments

If you are unsure, choose the larger option. A car that is too small on the day means leaving bags behind or booking a second vehicle at short notice.

Can I book child seats?

Yes. Request baby seats, child seats or boosters in the booking form and say how old the children are.

US car seats do not always fit UK vehicles in the same way, so many families find it easier to request seats with the booking. Tell us the age and rough weight of each child so the driver brings the right type.

Is a taxi better value than the train from Lakenheath or Mildenhall?

For a family or anyone with heavy luggage, usually yes. The train needs a change in Cambridge or Ely and often a second change in London for Heathrow or Gatwick.

Lakenheath station has a very limited service, so most people start from Brandon, Ely or Cambridge. With several large cases and children, carrying everything across platforms and the London Underground is hard work. A taxi takes you door to terminal for one fixed price, which for three or four people can be close to the cost of separate rail tickets.

How early should I leave for my flight?

For long-haul flights, plan to arrive at the airport three hours before departure. Leave the bases about four hours before departure for Stansted and about five hours before for Heathrow or Gatwick.

That leaves room for traffic on the M11 and M25 and for check-in with a lot of luggage. Tell us your flight time when you book and we will suggest a pick-up time.

Can I book a return trip from the airport to the base?

Yes. Choose return in the booking form and add your inbound flight number so the driver can track it.

If your flight lands early or late, the driver adjusts the pick-up time. You meet them in the arrivals hall, and they take you back to the gate, the visitor centre or your home address.

Do you work at night and at weekends?

Yes. We run 24 hours a day, seven days a week, at the same fixed fares.

Long-haul flights to the US often leave late morning, but some leave early and others arrive overnight. Whatever the time, the price stays the same.
