Which way do we drive?
Gatwick is about 35 miles from Worthing. There are two routes, and the driver chooses the quicker one on the day. The A24 runs north through Findon and over the Downs to Horsham, then the A264 and the M23 take you to the airport. The A27 runs east to Brighton, then the A23 and M23 go north. The A24 is usually quicker from Goring, Durrington and Findon Valley. The A27 is often better from East Worthing, Lancing and Sompting.
| When you travel | Typical journey time |
|---|---|
| Early morning (before 6am) | 40 to 45 minutes |
| Weekday off-peak | 50 to 60 minutes |
| Weekday morning peak | 60 to 80 minutes |
| Summer weekends | Up to 90 minutes |
The A27 through Worthing and Lancing is notoriously slow at peak times, and the A24 through Findon can be busy on summer afternoons. Your fare is fixed whichever route the driver takes.

Taxi or train?
Southern trains run from Worthing towards Gatwick, but the journey usually involves a change or a slow route along the coast, and takes over an hour. With suitcases, children or an early flight, a taxi is far less hassle. For a family of four, an estate to the South Terminal works out at about £27 each. That is close to the cost of rail tickets, and you go from door to door.
Early flights
Gatwick’s busiest departure time is early morning. For a 6:30am flight with checked bags, you should leave Worthing around 3:30am. There are no trains then, so a pre-booked car is the practical option. The fare is the same at night as during the day.
Families and groups
A people carrier takes six people with five large cases, and the 8-seater minivan carries eight people and eight cases. For larger family groups, wedding parties and clubs, the 12 and 16-seater minibuses carry everyone in one vehicle. Booking one larger vehicle is usually cheaper than two cars, and everyone arrives at check-in together.
Choosing the right vehicle
A saloon carries three people and three large cases, which suits a couple. An estate carries four of each and is the best choice for most families. The executive saloon, a Mercedes E-Class or similar, is £127 and suits business trips or a special occasion. If you are bringing golf clubs, a pushchair, a mobility scooter or extra luggage, tell us when you book so the car has room.
Accessibility
If anyone travelling uses a wheelchair or needs extra help, mention it when you book. We will send a suitable vehicle and allow more time at the pickup.
Older travellers
A car from your door to the terminal makes the trip much easier for older passengers. The driver helps with bags at both ends. If you have booked special assistance with your airline, tell us, and we will drop you at the entrance closest to the assistance desk.
Late arrivals
Many flights from the Mediterranean, the Canaries and further afield land at Gatwick late in the evening. Getting back to Worthing by train at that time can mean long waits and a late change. A pre-booked car means the driver is already waiting in arrivals, and you are home in under an hour on quiet roads.
Visitors to Worthing
If you are coming to visit family, staying at a seafront hotel, or arriving for a stay on the south coast, we can meet you at Gatwick and drop you at your door. At the end of your visit, we will collect you from the same address for your flight home. Give us the address and your flight details when you book.
Taxi or parking at Gatwick?
A week of parking at Gatwick in the summer holidays can cost more than two taxi fares from Worthing, and you still have to drive yourself home after a long flight. If a friend drives you instead, it is two round trips of over an hour each for them, plus the drop-off charge. A fixed fare each way, with airport charges included, is often the simplest choice.
Healthcare staff and shift workers
Worthing Hospital and the care homes along the coast employ many international staff who fly home through Gatwick. If you are finishing a shift and heading straight for a flight, we can collect you from work. Tell us the entrance and your shift end time when you book.
Coming home
Add your flight number when you book the return. We follow the flight, and the driver meets you in the arrivals hall at the North or South Terminal with a name sign. A saloon from Gatwick to Worthing is £95, and the fare does not change if your flight is delayed.
Our drivers
All Esskay Cars drivers are licensed private hire drivers, insured and DBS-checked. They know both routes between the coast and Gatwick, and they choose the quicker one on the day. Your fare stays the same either way.
Groups heading abroad
Worthing sends plenty of groups abroad, from golf societies and sports clubs to family celebrations. The 8-seater minivan to the South Terminal is £166 for the whole group, and the 16-seater minibus to the North Terminal is £359. Everyone travels together and arrives at check-in at the same time.
